The basic principle of roll forming involves passing metal strip through a series of sequentially arranged forming rolls to induce continuous, incremental transverse bending, ultimately shaping the material into the desired cross-sectional profile.
This process is characterized by high efficiency and high material utilization; forming speeds typically range from 5 to 30 m/min (reaching 70–200 m/min for welded pipe production), and material utilization generally exceeds 90%. It enables the production of complex cross-sectional profiles and is well-suited for mass production. Additionally, it facilitates the control and compensation of springback in high-strength steels, ensuring excellent dimensional stability and product consistency. The deformation process relies on line contact and incremental shaping, requiring relatively low forming forces.
Intelligent roll forming represents a key direction for future development. At its core lies the integration of highly intelligent control systems with advanced roll-forming technology, leveraging 5G, artificial intelligence, and digital twin technologies to achieve precise process control, predictive optimization, and flexible manufacturing.
